I write short stories on Sundays — the one day of the week when there is enough quiet to notice how strange ordinary life can be.
What interests me most is what happens to ordinary people when the world around them starts behaving absurdly: a queue that never moves, an institution that seems to exist only for its own sake, a city that solves its transport problem in a dream.
Sometimes these stories become satire. Sometimes science fiction. Sometimes they are quieter — about memory, growing up, disappointment, or the peculiar feeling that, when you are sixteen, spring can take a very long time to arrive.
I’m drawn to the point where the familiar becomes slightly unfamiliar. Where bureaucracy becomes surreal, technology becomes ridiculous, or something completely ordinary reveals a darker or stranger logic underneath.
Sunday Writer is where I collect those stories.
